A family friend first taught me about Guatemala when I was three years old. Captivated by the beautiful colors and textiles, I soon found that the Guatemalan people I met in America were equally as wonderful. In June of 2010, I traveled to Guatemala. While I was there I attended a language school with my mother.
When I was in Antigua, Guatemala, I learned about an inspiring non-profit: From Houses to Homes. In November of 2010, I returned to Guatemala with my family during Thanksgiving to build a house with this organization.
Thanksgiving took on new meaning as my family worked alongside a Guatemalan
family to build a home in five days. Starting from a barren site, we worked brick by brick until we added the last stroke of the paint that completed the home.
Building a house in Guatemala showed me how many people there are in the
world that need help. The house we built in one week made the difference of a lifetime
for a special family of five. It was also an experience that I will never forget.
Returning home, I was inspired to find a way to make a difference for more people in
this country.
Combining my interest in Guatemala, with my love for art and imagery, I had the fortunate experience to apprentice with Denver’s Portrait Photographer, Katy Tartakoff, to bring to
you my first art exhibit.
